U. S. STEEL HOSTS TOUR FOR NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR COUNTY COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

09/13/2006

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 11 – On Wednesday, September 13, U. S. Steel will host a group of delegates from the National Association for County Community and Economic Development (NACCED).  County representatives from 10 states will tour the Edgar Thomson steelmaking facility as part of a larger tour of the Mon Valley region.  Constructed in 1875 as part of the Carnegie Steel Company, U. S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson plant has been a major contributor to the region’s economy for over a century and continues to be an industry leader in quality steel production.

This tour is a part of the NACCED Conference that is being hosted by the Allegheny County Department of Economic Development from September 10-13, 2006, at the Omni William Penn in downtown Pittsburgh.

The NACCED is a national nonprofit organization composed of county government agencies that administer community development, economic development and affordable housing programs. The conference offers these agencies an opportunity to interact with colleagues from around the country, learn “best practices” and exchange beneficial ideas.

The host community traditionally highlights some of its own initiatives.  The intent of this tour is to highlight the Mon Valley region, the industries that contribute to its economy, and the development efforts that have taken place.
