October 22-26, 2012 was National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the resources we have rounded up will help keep your families and your homes lead-free! This year’s National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week theme, "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future,” highlights the importance of educating parents and children about lead, especially lead-based paint hazards in your home.

First let’s start off by saying that lead poisoning is a 100% preventable disease. With that wonderful fact in mind, let’s discuss how parents can create a safe lead-free environment for their children by limiting their children’s exposure to lead.Read More.

2012 Award of Excellence Winner

Allegheny County, PA

(Affordable Housing)

Hammett Place

 

The Hamnett Place program has been a multi-faceted neighborhood initiative, as part of a comprehensive Borough-wide effort involving residents and numerous community and regional partners, led by Allegheny County. It has focused on affordable housing revitalization and related efforts to restore blighted properties in a key historic area of a distressed community, the Borough of Wilkinsburg (population 15,000), bordering the City of Pittsburgh. So far $12 million has been committed from numerous sources. This has produced 7 beautifully restored and affordable homes, 27 attractive rental units, a regional housing resource center, a community garden, and spinoff activities. Read More.
